June 24, 1945, Sunday
Dear Mama,
How are you and all the folks? O.K. I hope. I'm O.K. Just finished a big laundry and hung it out to get wetter. Unusually wet here now. Would have went to church but they announced it at eight O clock & I was in the middle of my laundry.
A native just came up and sold the boys in the next tent a bunch of green bananas for five shillings - about 80 cents. They sell a few trinkets around here too.
Well my navigator Lt. Ragland has started the laundry. Having a little trouble, its hard to wash a shirt in a helmet.
The four officers of our crew live together and really get along fine. This Ragland is really a lot of fun. He & Tate just got back from church. The other guy Domurat is a Catholic & goes to church regularly.
I missed breakfast this morning and they had fresh eggs - first time since I got here. Hard luck.
We get issue of beer here about 24 bottles a month. I tried one the other day. Don't care for it at all. Pretty good mouth wash tho. Also four cartons of cig. per month at 50 cents per carton. Can sell them for $1.60...
