Dear Folks
Long time no write, huh? Well I've been quite busy for the past five days. We are staying at Clark Field, Manila and hauling our P.O.W.s from Okinawa down to here. Quite an experience. Yesterday we had a load of boys from Java. Only one could speak English but we got along fine & collected a few more Jap bills.
I've talked quite a bit with the fellows and they tell some very interesting experiences they had. The Japs must have treated them pretty bad.
Don't know how much longer we will be here but hope to get back to Samar today. Must have a pile of mail down there.
Guess its winter time (almost) down there - States. Its pretty nice here now but was warm at Samar when we left. Okinawa is really a hole. Raining every day. We stayed over there one night. Not too bad but I guess some of the crews had to sleep in their ships. We were able to get a tent.
Well happy day, I guess Billy will pull in there one of these days. The 43rd seems to be going home in high gear. Boy do they deserve it. Say I flew over the place where Billy was based here on Luzon yesterday. Knew it from the big grass hut they have there. I could see him now if he were there. We are resting today & may make another trip tomorrow. I don't know.
Yesterday we had to land at a little strip on Northern Okinawa to unload some meat. Boy what a place to get into. Had bad weather & trouble contacting them by radio. Seen a few Jap civilians around there.
Did it rain here last nite. We had just got in the tent when it started pouring. Well it was kind of damp for a while. Blowing in. The tent didn't leak too bad.
Well I guess I'd better hush. I'll write again sooner.
Love Oscar
